Starck powder could not be consolidated at temperatures above 1650°C, and only two densified samples of the MER Corp. powder were successfully produced. C. Starck powder consolidated at MMI under vacuum also exhibited similar defects. ” This phenomenon occurs when current flows rapidly through the center of the sample during consolidation, resulting in a high current density 30 and rapid heating.

Thus switching the microwave on would lead to reaction and if the reaction has not reached the self-sustaining stage switching the microwave off would stop the reaction. For reactions that would not be self-sustaining because of a very low adiabatic flame temperature, microwave energy may also be used to drive these reactions at stoichiometric conditions. For reactions having a low flame temperature because of extremely low concentration of one reactant, microwave heating may also be used to promote reaction.

At even lower concentration of Mo, transgranular fracture mode was observed predominantly which in turn is responsible for the higher toughness values. The change of fracture modes may be due to the strengthening of grain boundaries of matrix by reduction of residual stresses on the interfaces. Mo ligaments present either between or inside the mullite grains release the residual stresses on interfaces of mullite grains. From the fractured surfaces, it can be seen that the interfacial bond strength between the mullite matrix and reinforcement is not satisfactory because of presence of perforations due to pullouts of ductile phase from the matrix.
