A sample of the dark patch and one of the lighter matrix was prepared separately for TEM examination. The dark patch sample revealed a crystalline secondary phase whose selected area diffraction (SAD) patterns matched that of YAG. The zone axis photograph for YAG is shown along with the TEM bright-field image in Fig. 5. There was also an amorphous yttrium-rich secondary (grain-boundary) phase in the dark patch region as shown by the CBED pattern. The lighter matrix sample, however, showed no evidence of a crystalline secondary phase, but only amorphous structure for the grain- boundary phase.
