The windmill and surrounding buildings were built of stone and offered excellent protection from the attacking British. This, coupled with the fact that the Hunters believed Canadians would join them, enticed them to hold their ground. British forces began the attack on the Hunters on Tuesday morning. British fire made little impact on the invaders' position, as the windmill's three-and-a-half-foot-thick walls protected those inside from the worst of the barrage. In addition, the Hunters had mounted their three cannons outside the windmill's door and the volleys from these guns kept naval vessels far enough away to prevent any direct hits from that quarter.
